We made a last minute decision to go to the Northeast after our Omaha and Badlands trip was cancelled this summer. We were planning to start the vacation with a week in Boston and then head to Maine for the rest of the week. The kids were so excited to check off a couple more states on their map!
We took a really late flight on Friday night and arrived in Boston around 1am. The kids all did great on the trip and the little three slept most of the way. The next morning, we slept in a little and then headed to our 11am tour of the Freedom Trail. The tour guides are dressed in authentic attire and covered a lot of information! It was SO hot and was record breaking temps in Boston that weekend. The tour was a little long for the kids and they lost interest in the heat. Hopefully they retained a few facts!
After the tour we had lunch reservations at the oldest restaurant in America, the Union Oyster House.
We were lucky enough to sit at the JFK table where JFK frequently dined.
Everything we ate was really good. We had to try the Boston Cream Pie for dessert. It was delicious!
After lunch we headed to the Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park. We were a little worried about the parking and decided to take the subway. It was the first time the kids had taken the subway and they were not impressed. It was hot, crowded and pretty slow. We just used it as a reason to teach about public transportation!
The Boston Red Sox were playing the Toronto Blue Jays. The boys were so excited to see a new ball park. We happened to be right in the sun at the hottest point of the day. The sun was so bright it was a little tough to see the game.
It was so sunny and bright! The ice cream melted in about 5 seconds and got everywhere!
We were drenched and decided to spend most of our time doing all of the fun kids activities in the concourse where it was shady and cooler. The kids met Wally and Tessie, the Red Sox mascots. Wally didn't like Peyton's shirt and decided to cover it up. Ha!
Peyton and Conor tried out the batting simulator and thought it was pretty cool.
Every time Conor would hit a home run he would point to the sky and do a little dance. He was cracking me up!
While the boys were hitting in the simulator and testing their pitching speed, Caitie waited patiently in line to get a balloon. She was so proud of it!
It was a little hot for our first visit to Fenway Park, but we still had a blast!
We headed back to the hotel and walked to Tony C's, which is a sports bar overlooking the water. We had a delicious dinner and then all crashed at the hotel! It was a fun first day in Boston!
