Peyton- 8 Months

Another month has flown by! My sweet little Peyton is 8 months old already!

Peyton is such a sweet little guy. Constantly smiling and so happy! Margaret said he is one of the happiest babies she has had.

Peyton had a busy month! He started full on crawling (no more army crawling) and pulling up to stand!  He is still a little shaky when he stands but gets so excited for himself when he pulls up! It also means that he can now get to most of Patrick's toys. Patrick is used to putting toys on the coffee table out of Peyton's reach, but not any more! Peyton is pretty determined to get anything Patrick is playing with!

His new favorite crawling spot!

Peyton is probably the most determined little baby I have ever seen. If he sets his eyes on something, he will work his way over to it until he gets it (and then immediately puts it in his mouth). I could reposition him a million times and he would still go straight for the item he wanted. No more distracting with another toy anymore!

Peyton is also extremely strong. I have trouble changing his diaper because he can sit up even when I am trying to make him lay down with one hand! He also wins tug-of-war with Patrick sometimes!

Getting ready for school!

Notice all of those teeth? He has really been teething recently. These pictures are about a week late, but for the entire month, he had his two side teeth and no front teeth on the top. We kept joking that all he wants for Christmas is his two front teeth. Well looks like he is getting his wish and they are coming in. Right now he has six teeth, which seems like a lot to me!

Peyton LOVES food. The only thing he has tried and not liked is avocado's. He is also the messiest eater! For some reason he loves to smear food all over his face and hair. I think he constantly has food in his hair!

Peyton's hair is getting so long! His hair is so different from Patrick's. Patrick's is curly and thick and Peyton's is stick straight and really thin. You can tell it is starting to grow over his ears!

The weather has been cold, so we have been bundling up!

Peyton is still nursing like a champ. He doesn't drink a lot at school and instead prefers to wait for me to get home, which means he is still waking up a couple times at night. I'm hoping as he gets a little older and can eat real food this will stop, but who knows. I'm not sure what I would do with more sleep anyway, so for now it is working okay for us.

I have had so much fun watching this little boy grow! Just wish it would slow down some! Love you Peyton and can't wait to see all the new tricks you learn next month!

Peyton's First Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving started out with Michael playing in his annual "Turkey Bowl." I wish I could have taken the boys but since it was 17 degrees we decided to pass! So the boys and I had a relaxing morning at home.

After Michael got home we headed over to Nana and Grumps house to eat lunch.  We took a few family pictures before diving into all the yummy food!

How cute are these boys?

Reading books with uncle Matt

After lunch at Nana and Grumps house, we headed to my aunts lake house to eat another yummy dinner with my side of the family.

Patrick was his normal silly little self!

It was such a wonderful day with family. I feel so blessed to have such a large family so close! I have so much to be thankful for!

Feeding Therapy

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you know that we have struggled with Patrick's eating. We talked to our pediatrician at Patrick's 18 month and 2 year appointment and got some suggestions.  After trying them all, failing miserably and realizing that this was not something he was going to grow out of, we went back to the pediatrician to talk about our options. At this point, Patrick will only eat a handful of foods including, milk, yogurt, juice, crackers, fruit snacks, cantaloupe, M&M's and waffles.

Our pediatrician recommended we go to High Hopes to have a feeding evaluation. I was so nervous to go to the feeding evaluation and I was blown away by how well it went! It was a two hour appointment where the therapist talked to us for an hour about Patrick's habits from birth. She literally covered every thing that has ever happened in his life. I was a little surprised it was so thorough! We determined that the eating problems started around 18 months when he had the stomach bug. Prior to 18 months, he was a picky eater but would definitely eat some vegetables.

After talking through Patrick's history, she put him in the booster chair and started her evaluation.  He was a little nervous to sit in the booster chair, but calmed down when Michael and I sat on the floor next to him. She started with a preferable food, graham crackers. He chowed down on the graham cracker with no problems, so I was excited he would actually eat something! She looked at everything from his chewing pattern to his hand movements, etc. She then gave him cheerios which he also gobbled up. After Cheerios, she tried bacon which I knew was going to be difficult for him. She started breaking the bacon in half, which I knew bothered him. He doesn't like any food to be broken. He started getting upset and said "I want to eat at my house" and kept reaching for me and whining. He also refused to try the bacon, but did touch it to put it in the "all done bowl." Before this session he has refused to even touch most foods. Next she tried a mozzarella cheese stick. He got excited about opening the cheese stick, but did not want to eat it. So first the therapist started with touching it, smelling it, kissing it, licking and biting (but not swallowing).  Michael and I also touched, smelled, kissed, licked and bit it.  Patrick thought it was funny to lick it and look at Michael and I's bite marks on the cheese stick. Surprisingly, he decided to bite the cheese stick, but spit it out and would not eat it. Definitely a big step! Next she tried a mini pancake. Patrick would lick it and look at his bite marks, but did not eat it. Again, we did the touching, kissing, licking, etc. so he could see it was safe before he tried it.  Next the therapist tried a chicken nugget. He got really upset by the texture of the chicken nugget and did what the therapist called "fingersplay," which is a sign of distress in children. I had never noticed this before. He smelled the chicken nugget and even took a bite which he swallowed! HUGE step for Patrick! He then realized what he had done and got a little nervous. Next she tried oranges. This really upset Patrick because of the messiness. He would tear them apart with his hands, but then got upset about his hands being messy. He refused to eat or lick the oranges. He seemed really excited to try and please the therapist, but you could tell that he was also conflicted because of his nervousness around food.

After the evaluation, the therapist talked to us about what she noticed. She noticed that Patrick does a movement with his hands where he spreads all his fingers out and tightens up (kind of like a claw). She said that when children do this (along with some of the other signs she noticed) it is a sign that their brain is sending a single to them that the food will hurt them and not to touch. She determined that Patrick has some sensory processing issues. I was not surprised at this diagnosis. Patrick has never been a child that would get messy, even as an infant. Bright lights and loud noises seem to bother him a lot. This is a totally treatable condition that she thinks we can work through with him. It just takes time to teach Patrick's brain that different textures of food will not harm him (i.e. will not cause the stomach bug). She recommended that Patrick receive therapy for the next 9 months or so. She also recommended messy play at home such as finger painting or a food fight. This has always been difficult for Patrick. He has trouble getting dirty and it really bothers him to the point that he shuts down and can't function until he is clean.

I felt really excited after our feeding evaluation and am feeling really hopeful! It is incredibly difficult to see your child not eating day in and day out because of fear. I was so proud of Patrick. He did really well and was responding really well to the therapist. My ultimate goal is that we can go to a restaurant with him (we haven't been to a restaurant with him in over a year!) or go to a party and have Patrick find something that he can eat so that he doesn't feel uncomfortable. It's difficult for us to go to a party and see all the other children eating and see our child nervous and begging to go home once everyone sits down to eat. I think this is going to be life-changing for our family and I am so excited to get started!

Here are a few recent pictures of Patrick at school (and one at home with Turk!)

Patrick's School Pictures

Patrick had his school pictures a couple weeks ago. They turned out much better than I thought they would! Although I didn't recognize him at first since they poofed up his hair. I am used to those tight little curls he is normally sporting!

I can only imagine what they had to bribe him with to sit still and smile for the camera! ha!

UT vs. Auburn Game

Michael's parents gave us tickets to the UT. vs. Auburn game in Knoxville for Michael's 30th birthday. His parents also offered to watch both the boys so that we could have a weekend off! I took them up on watching Patrick, but we decided to bring Peyton along. Little guy has been pretty sick and has been getting up a few times a night, so I felt a little bad leaving him with someone else! It was nice for Peyton to get alone time with us and Patrick was in heaven staying with Nana and Grumps.

We headed to Knoxville Friday afternoon and made it in time to eat dinner with Denton and my parents, who also came for the game. On Saturday, we dropped off Peyton with Michael's aunt and uncle and we headed to tailgate and to the game.

The tickets were incredible! We were on the 40th yard line about 20 rows up. It was a little cold and not a great game so we ended up leaving a little early. It was really fun to be kid free for a few hours! Michael and I don't get many days together without the kids!

After the game we picked up Peyton and headed to my sister's condo for some post game tailgating.  Matthew and Mark joined us for a while!

Peyton also got to visit Matthew and Mark's apartment.

We kept Peyton up until 11pm that night and he was still all smiles before going to bed! Michael's grandparents were sweet enough to let us stay with them. Peyton loved showing off for them!

Can we talk about those precious baby rolls? I can't get enough!

And here is a picture that I got from Nana. Clearly Patrick was having fun hanging out with Harper, Nana and Grumps!

Peyton's First Halloween

Halloween was so fun with the boys this year. I let Patrick decide who he wanted to be and he picked Mickey Mouse. He also told us what we were going to be. He said that Michael was going to be Goofy, I was going to be Minnie, baby was going to be Pluto and Turk and Bailey were going to be Pluto too. So we went with it and all dressed up!

On Halloween morning we had Patrick's party at school. He was really nervous and did not leave Michael and I's arms. All the other kids sat down to eat their cookies and fruit parfaits and Patrick refused. So Michael and I left for the trick-or-treating portion. His teachers said he had a lot more fun after we left. I was sad we missed it!

On Halloween night it stormed really badly so we just went to the grandparents houses.

On Friday we went to a party at a friend's house. They had a hay ride that the kids rode from house to house in. Patrick loved the hayride! We had to convince him to get off to go trick-or-treat.  Patrick was so cute trick-or-treating. He would say trick-or-treat please and then get really excited after they put candy in his bucket. He also always made sure to say thank you without me prompting him! I was so proud! Patrick only went to about four houses before deciding that riding in the hayride was more fun!

It was a fun Halloween! I can't wait until the boys can trick-or-treat together next year!
